How To Treat The Disease Known As Malaria

Posted by admin - October 31st, 2011

Many people are fearful of getting malaria, a disease that can be very detrimental to your health. Even though medicine today has gone far, it has yet to find a cure that stops every form of malaria. This is not to say that there are not cures for this disease that exist. Now let’s examine a few ways that you can treat malaria as well as several strategies that you can use that will help you avoid ever getting it.

There are four separate types of malaria, and this varies from one region to another. The kind of parasite that’s causing the disease is an important factor in deciding how to treat it. Many common drugs used to fight malaria, such as chloroquine, are not as effective as they used to be because the parasites have developed an immunity to them. Doctors that have treated malaria for many years will know the best drugs to treat you with should you come under their care. Using multiple drugs for malaria treatment is very common especially since drug-resistant strains are becoming the norm. Different strains can be identified based upon where you contracted the disease and can be treated once this is known.

Becoming familiar with malaria, and understanding what it actually does, is the first step to helping yourself especially when you travel in these regions. A few weeks later, after you have been bitten by a mosquito carrying malaria, you will start noticing certain symptoms. This is not, however, always the case, as the parasites can live in your body for months or even years. Watch for symptoms and signs of malaria after you have returned from a trip to a tropical area; keep watching even if you think you were never bitten just to make sure. People that do not have symptoms, but think that they were bitten by a malaria carrying mosquito, should get a blood test as soon as possible. The faster that you treat your malaria, if you do have it, the quicker that you will be able to deal with this disease.

Doctors that understand malaria sometimes have difficulty diagnosing this disease properly. A physician typically goes by symptoms to diagnose a certain condition; malaria has similar symptoms to the common cold and other infections making it difficult to diagnose. When traveling in unfamiliar places, it’s fairly common to pick up local “bugs” and infections, so the only way to determine if it’s malaria is to get a blood test. There are many illnesses you can get while traveling that are potentially serious, but many can be easily treated by antibiotics or will just work their way through your system. Very different from the common cold, malaria can remain in your system for many weeks and cause complications with your health that will not go away. That’s why it’s essential to get a blood test for malaria if you’re in a place where this disease exists and you have any symptoms. Malaria treatments do exist, yet there are many variables that must be considered before you can receive the right treatment. The goal is to eventually find a vaccine, although more cures for the disease are found every year. Just do whatever you can to make sure that you do not get infected with malaria through proper prevention techniques.
